Hexagram 27 – Nourishment
(Yi / The Corners of the Mouth)
Judgment
The form enclosed by two solid lines above and below
is the image of an open mouth.
What enters the mouth must be correct—
only then is there no error.
Now is the time
to examine carefully
both your goals
and the means by which you pursue them.
If either is mistaken,
even great effort bears no fruit.
Each person is born with a unique nature.
Those who do not know what they truly are
end up imitating others without thought.
To waste time on trivial matters
and forget what is essential
is foolish.
One who nourishes their strengths
becomes a great person.
One who feeds only their weaknesses
becomes small.
The wise do not rush toward novelty.
First, they reflect on their own nature.
They restrain their words,
moderate their eating and drinking,
and begin by examining themselves.
Lines
(Please find your line number using the birth-year chart below.)
1.
A person of fine potential
loses sight of themselves
and begins to imitate others.
Thus, good fortune slips away.
2.
To abandon a great aspiration
merely for food and clothing
is to act in reverse.
To flatter the powerful
in order to survive—
if continued,
leads to misfortune.
3.
One becomes stained by wrongdoing
through desire.
If one’s thinking is mistaken,
even believing oneself righteous
brings disaster.
For ten years, do not act—
guard yourself.
Misfortune.
4.
Yet to abandon a great aim
in order to sustain oneself,
to remain watchful and wait for opportunity,
is not in itself wrong.
5.
Though one may appear unconventional,
if the heart is upright,
good fortune comes.
But this is not yet the time
to cross the great river.
6.
One who nourishes all people
must never forget
the danger inherent in nourishment itself.
Only then
can the great river be crossed.
Advice
Creative power rises
from the depths of your heart,
yet you remain
as still and unmoving as a mountain.
This is the time
to gather strength inward
and nourish yourself.
Discern carefully
your own talents and nature.
Only when you truly know yourself
can you nourish others.
