Reading the Yi-Ching as a Flow, Not a Point
The other day, when a lady visited my home, she spoke to me through tears about her situation.
Feeling that many others are likely carrying the same kind of pain, I reflected on it through the flow of the Yi-Ching. Today, I would like to share that perspective.
— The Social Transition from 11(past) → 12(present )→ 13(message for now )→ 14(future )—
Category 1 | The Flow of Society
The Yi-Ching is not a tool for predicting the future.
It is a system for understanding where a situation comes from and where it is trying to go—
in other words, its direction and movement.
For this reason, no single hexagram should be read in isolation.
Between hexagrams, there is always a vector of change—an arrow pointing forward.
The Social Flow in the Yi-Ching
11 Tai (Peace)
↓
12 Pi (Stagnation)
↓
13 Tong Ren (Fellowship)
↓
14 Da You (Great Possession — seen as a hope)
This sequence represents a natural cycle experienced by societies, organizations, and human relationships:
- A period of smooth circulation
- A phase of blockage and stagnation
- Reconnection through shared purpose
- A world that appears, filled with light and abundance
What matters most is this:
Hexagram 12 (Stagnation) is not the end.
The Yi-Ching always shows the next direction, even when movement seems to stop.
The Structure and Meaning of Each Hexagram
— Seeing the Flow Through the Diagrams —
(The six lines are read from bottom to top)
11 — Tai (Peace)
When universe and Earth Communicate Naturally
Upper Trigram: Kun ☷ (Earth)
─ ─
─ ─
─ ─
Lower Trigram: Qian ☰ (Universe)
───
───
───
In Tai, universe (principle, vision, creative force) is below,
and Earth (reality, society, people) receives it above.
- Ideals do not float away from reality
- Reality does not become rigid or closed
- Energy flows naturally between levels
This is not dramatic success, but a state with little friction,
where things work without excessive effort.
12 — Pi (Stagnation)
When What Once Flowed Temporarily Closes
Upper Trigram: Qian ☰ (universe)
───
───
───
Lower Trigram: Kun ☷ (Earth)
─ ─
─ ─
─ ─
Here, the structure of Tai is reversed.
- Principle retreats upward
- Reality becomes heavy and immobile
This is not failure.
It indicates that the previous structure has completed its role.
In times of Pi, effort feels ineffective and communication falters—
not as punishment, but as a signal that a new form of connection is required.
13 — Tong Ren (Fellowship)
Shared Purpose Becomes the Flame That Reconnects People
Upper Trigram: Qian ☰ (universe)
───
───
───
Lower Trigram: Li ☲ (Fire)
───
─ ─
───
In Tong Ren, fire (clarity, intention, purpose) burns below,
while universe(the public realm, universal order) encompasses it.
Reconnection here is not based on power, numbers, or advantage.
It arises through shared direction and resonance.
Tong Ren describes the moment when
those who truly understand one another quietly find each other again—
forming the core of what comes next.
14 — Da You (Great Possession)
A World Filled with Light, Shining in All Directions
Upper Trigram: Li ☲ (Fire)
───
─ ─
───
Lower Trigram: Qian ☰ (universe)
───
───
───
Da You presents an image of universe’s potential and strength,
over which the light of the sun shines evenly in all directions.
This is not about competition or hierarchy.
- Nothing is hidden
- What is needed circulates freely
- The world feels complete and sufficient
The purpose formed in Tong Ren naturally expands,
becoming light that illuminates society as a whole.
Da You appears here not as a guaranteed outcome,
but as a vision of fullness and harmony that comes into view.
